The need to the limit and the voluntarily accepted endurance  originates in the depths of our very nature and applies not only to the field of art but also to all conscious  manifestations of human activity. This is the need for order, without which nothing can be created and with the disappearance of which everything falls apart.

And every order requires compulsion. Only it would be in vain to see this as an obstacle to freedom. On the contrary, restraint and restriction contribute to the flourishing of this freedom and only prevent it from degenerating into outright promiscuity.
